Hon. Peter Mayer (Ret.)
Hon. Peter H. Mayer served as a Justice of the Supreme Court in Suffolk County for twelve years, having retired from the bench in 2018. During his years on the bench, he managed tort, commercial and foreclosure calendars which together totaled an average case load of 1800 cases per year. He tried numerous tort cases to verdict including those alleging basic negligence from car accidents to slip and falls and labor law violations. He also handled commercial officer/shareholder disputes as well as real property claims.
In 2015, Justice Mayer was asked to preside over Suffolk County’s first medical malpractice settlement part as he had previously tried numerous medical malpractice cases to verdict. During his tenure as the medical malpractice settlement judge, he averaged an 80 percent settlement rate. His success rate is a testament to his ability to help lawyers and their clients resolve their disputes outside of the courtroom.
Prior to joining the bench, Justice Mayer practiced in criminal law on the federal and state level. He served for over ten years as a prosecutor in Suffolk County and ultimately served as Chief of the Major Crime Bureau for the Suffolk County District Attorney. He served as an Assistant County Attorney in Suffolk defending civil rights cases. In addition to his career in public service, Justice Mayer also practiced law in the private sector, focusing on the defense of criminal cases.
Justice Mayer is a member of both the New York State and the Colorado State Bar.
